Compare & Volume Discount - User Guide

Introduction

The Compare & Volume Discount is our most advanced pricing engine. It combines the features of a base "Compare Price" markdown with tiered "Volume Discounts" stacked on top of it.

How it works: You grant the targeted customer a flat base discount strictly for being part of the group, and then offer even deeper tiered discounts if they buy in bulk.

This replicates true B2B logic where a wholesaler might get 20% off retail immediately, but can get 30% off retail if they buy a case of 50.

1. Accessing Compare & Volume

  1. Go to your Shopify Admin panel.
  2. Navigate to Apps > [Your App Name].
  3. From the app dashboard, click Create Rule and select Compare Price & Volume.

2. Field Reference

General Information

  • Rule Name: A private name (e.g., "B2B Base + Case Break Tiers").
  • Status: Active (live) or Draft (not live).
  • Priority: Lower numbers override higher numbers (e.g., 0 vs 1).

Part 1: Base Compare Discount

This is the baseline price for the targeted customer, even if they only buy 1 item.

  • Base Discount Type: Percentage, Fixed Amount, or Fixed Price.
  • Base Discount Value: The value of the baseline discount (e.g., 20%).

In this example, the customer's "Starting Price" is 20% lower than the normal retail price displayed to the public.

Part 2: Volume Tiers (Stacked)

Here you configure the bulk tiers that activate if the customer buys larger quantities. Crucially, the Volume Tiers defined here completely override the Base Price when triggered.

  • Volume Discount Type: Usually matches the Base Type, but can be set independently.
  • Tiers Configuration:
    • Minimum Quantity: The quantity threshold.
    • Discount Value: The total discount they get.

Note regarding mathematics: If your base discount is 20%, and your first volume tier is for 10 items, the tier value should be higher than 20% (e.g., 25%). It does not subtract 25% from the already discounted 20%; it replaces the 20% discount with a 25% discount against the original retail price.

Targeting & Appearance

  • Product Targeting: Select Specific Products, Collections, or All Products.
  • Customer Targeting: Crucial for this feature, you usually restrict this to B2B tags.
  • Volume Table Display: Configure the storefront UI bulk table. This table will automatically calculate and display the math comparing the Volume Tier prices against the Customer's isolated Base Price so they easily understand their savings.

3. Real-World Example

Scenario: The Premier Distributor Catalog

You sell a coffee maker for $100 retail. You have "Premier Distributors" who get 30% off immediately, but 40% off if they buy 10, and 50% off if they buy 50.

Configuration:

  • Targeting: Customer Tag Premier_Distributor
  • Base Compare Discount: Percentage -> 30
    • (Customer visits product page, sees price as $70)
  • Volume Tiers: Percentage
    • Qty 10, Discount 40
      • (Adds 10 to cart, unit price drops to $60)
    • Qty 50, Discount 50
      • (Adds 50 to cart, unit price drops to $50)

The storefront UI table will display the $70 baseline, with the $60 and $50 tier discounts listed below it, perfectly visualizing their B2B savings stack.
